Why Tanlines?
Skin produces melanin when exposed to UV (sunlight).
Covered areas (underwear, tops, straps, etc.) block UV → no melanin increase → stay pale.
Exposed areas tan → become darker.
Result = visible contrast → tan lines.
Why it varies so much between women
1. Clothing patterns
Different outfits = different coverage shapes
(bikinis, bras, crop tops, straps, etc.)
That’s why tan lines can look very specific or “designed”
2. Time in the sun
More exposure = deeper contrast
Light exposure = faint lines
3. Skin type
Some people tan easily (darker or olive tones)
Others burn or barely tan (fair skin)
This changes how strong the contrast looks
4. Frequency of exposure
Repeated sun exposure reinforces the same lines
Occasional sun = softer, less defined lines
5. Artificial tanning
Sunbeds or spray tans can exaggerate or create clean, sharp lines
Why the contrast can look extreme
Areas like breasts, hips, or under clothing are almost always covered → stay very light
Outer areas (arms, chest, shoulders, legs) get constant exposure → darker
Lighting and skin smoothness make the contrast stand out even more
